Petition : stand up for culture Uncategorized Tue 01.04.25

Since 21 January 2025, thousands of people have been rallying in support of the public cultural service, which is facing severe budget cuts.

Budget cuts by the State and local authorities are plunging public art and cultural services into an alarming situation.

Every time a budget cut of 20,000 euros is announced, the equivalent of a permanent job in a cultural structure or an intermittent artistic, technical or administrative job is threatened with disappearance.
Every time a job is lost, access to art and culture is reduced for the entire French population, in cities, rural villages and suburbs. It means fewer creations, fewer performances, less arts education in schools, fewer cultural interventions in hospitals and elsewhere.
Every time a job is lost, there is a greater risk that artistic teams and the venues that enable us to meet and debate will cease to operate.
The context of budgetary austerity cannot conceal the threats hanging over our democracy. This is why we are saying that sacrificing public services, including the arts and culture, is a dangerous calculation in view of the major societal benefits they bring.
The fact that the State devotes 0.8% of its budget to this public policy is already far too little to meet the needs expressed by the public and by professionals.

All of us, beneficiaries of the public arts and culture service, audiences, artists, technicians, employees and venue managers, are standing up together to assert our need for a living culture that stimulates the imagination, shares knowledge, reflects our diversity and promotes good living together.
Together, we stand up to defend our public service, its jobs and the demands put forward in unison by the employers‘ and employees’ unions.
